5 Reasons Some People Love Cold Weather Camping

Deandra Falcon

Camping’s busiest time runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Between early September and late May, a majority of the RVs owned by Americans are stored away in anticipation of the upcoming season. As for tent campers, only the heartiest among them head outdoors during the colder months. Nonetheless, there is that group of people for whom cold weather camping is the best.

How about you? Do you prefer to stay tucked away indoors once the mercury begins dipping below a certain temperature? Does your idea of a perfect winter day involve curling up under a blanket with a good book while the fireplace crackles?

Those of us who find cold weather uncomfortable may not understand people who love cold weather camping. But they are out there. They love camping during the winter months for a long list of reasons, including these five from courtesy of Connecticut-based AirSkirts:

1. Campgrounds Are Quiet

Good luck finding a campsite during the summer if you don’t make the effort to book ahead. Camping has become that popular. But after Labor Day, things change, and campgrounds get much quieter. Some are so quiet that you don’t even need an advance booking. You can drive right in, register, and park.

A quieter campground means fewer party animals to worry about. It means fewer people trying to use a limited number of amenities. Depending on where you camp, you might actually have a whole place to yourself.

2. The Views Are Different

The great outdoors changes with the seasons. Along with those changes are different views. For example, consider New York’s Catskills region. The beautiful Catskill Mountains look different in the winter than any other time of year. The same is true no matter where you go. Cold weather views offer a very different experience.

3. The Activities Are Different, Too

Those activities campers enjoy change with the seasons as well. Maybe you’ve camped in Utah’s Wasatch front region during the summer. You have enjoyed exploring the mountains on the many groomed trails provided for that very purpose. But come winter, those same mountains become a skier’s paradise.

Anglers transition from bass boats to ice fishing during the winter. Nature hikes are replaced by snowshoeing while tubing on the lake becomes snowmobiling in a meadow. Everything is different once the cold weather arrives.

4. The RV Is More Cozy

If you prefer RV camping, you know that the seasons impact your comfort in different ways. In the dead of winter, your RV becomes cozier. It is almost like your own secret hideaway shared with those you love most. Of course, you’ll want to protect your motorhome or trailer with AirSkirts inflatable RV skirting, but that’s a minor inconvenience when you’re snuggling up with your partner on a cold night.

5. The Air Is More Crisp

For some people, summer is difficult with its heat and humidity. They have trouble breathing. They perspire at uncomfortable levels. For them, warm weather camping is no fun at all. However, that all changes when temperatures start to drop.

A big advantage of cold weather camping is the crisper, cleaner air. It can be quite exhilarating to go outside on a late fall or early winter day and breathe deeply. There is just something unique about cooler air out in nature.

Though it is strange to some people, there are those who live to go camping in cold weather. They don’t mind lower temperatures. They don’t mind snow and sleet. For them, there is no better time to get out camping than that time of year everyone else considers the off-season.
